LAND RECORDINGS

The Office of the County Clerk is responsible for the filing and recording of all documents affecting real property ownership and transfer within Somerset County, including deeds, mortgages, and their related documents, as well as tax liens. This office houses a Records Room that is open to the public. All documents are available for public inspection and retrieval.  By law the staff cannot conduct a title search.  However, they will familiarize visitors with the computerized recording and indexing system.

COVER SHEET

All documents submitted for recording, including e-recordings, require a cover sheet. The cover sheet is part of the submitted land record and will be included in the calculation of recording fees.    Flat fee documents still require a cover sheet, however, there will be no additional charge.

GENERAL RECORDING QUESTIONS

I found a recording under my name/property/business that seems suspicious.  What should I do?
If you feel that something was recorded maliciously, contact local law enforcement.

Can you notify me when something is recorded under my name or business?
Yes.  Please visit our new property notification service (https://www.co.somerset.nj.us/government/elected-officials/county-clerk/property-recording-notification-service) for more information.

Can I request that your office send me all the records relating to my property?
No.  That constitutes a title search, which we are not authorized to do.  Please contact a professional title search company for more information.

I paid my mortgage.  Will I receive anything from your office?
No.  We do not send anything to the property owner once a mortgage is recorded as being satisfied.  You can contact your lender or create a free account on our site to search for copies of your deed and discharge of mortgage.

Can anyone see information about my property?
All of the information provided on our search site is considered public information under New Jersey law.  


 e-RECORDING

The Somerset County Clerk’s Office has now implemented direct e-recording of documents. Customers wishing to record documents electronically with our office can do so through one of the national certified electronic filing partners listed below. RECORDING FEES

The Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey offers a comprehensive recording reference manual that contains recording requirements including statutory references, tax calculations, recording fees, explanation of acknowledgments as well as a glossary of terms.  COANJ Recorders Manual

The following fees include the $5 Homelessness Trust Fund fee.

We charge an additional $6 for each name indexed after the first 5 names and $10 for each additional marginal notation.
