Somerset County divisions, boards,  commissions, and affiliated agencies offer a variety of programs and services that provide a social safety net for persons in need.   More information is available about each area by linking to the webpages.

Board of Social Services
Administers public assistance programs to persons in need. 

General Assistance
Cash assistance and limited Medicaid coverage is available to individuals and couples without dependent children who have little or no income and live in the following municipalities: Bedminster, Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Bound Brook, Branchburg, Far Hills, Green Brook, Hillsborough, Manville, Millstone, Montgomery, North Plainfield, Raritan, Rocky Hill, Somerville, South Bound Brook and Warren. Other individuals should apply in the municipality in which they live. This is a time-limited program and recipients may participate for a maximum of five years.

Homelessness Trust Fund
When the NJ State legislature adopted the County Homelessness Trust Fund Act, it enabled Somerset County to establish the Homelessness Trust Fund. The purpose of the act is to provide funding for activities directly related to housing individuals and families that are homeless and activities to prevent homelessness.   Specifically, funds can be used to provide rental assistance, supportive services, and to develop housing.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps)
The SNAP Program provides monthly benefits that help low-income households buy the food they need for good health.
