County governments in New Jersey have a limited role in the provision of K-12 public education.  While each municipality in Somerset County has its own local board of education responsible for providing for the public education needs of its children, three affiliated county agencies are also part of the overall education system in Somerset County.

N.J. Department of Education - Executive County Superintendent of Schools
The executive county superintendent's office serves as a liaison for the N.J. Commission of Education with the local school districts.  The executive county superintendent and the staff are responsible for a variety of areas, including review and approval of district budgets; monitoring educational programs  to ensure the provision of a thorough and efficient system of education mandate is met; interpreting educational law, code, and policy to school districts, boards of education, and parents.

Raritan Valley Community College
Located in Branchburg, RVCC is a bi-county community college serving Somerset and Hunterdon County residents.  The two-year college offers more than 90 associate degree and certificate programs to a student body of 8,200.  In addition, the college offers professional development and personal enrichment courses as well as corporate training and small business assistance.

S.C. Vocational & Technical Schools
The Vocational & Technical High School is a fully accredited, four year high school located in Bridgewater.  Serving all of Somerset County, SCVTHS accepts students on a full or shared-time basis for the seventeen challenging programs that combine training in occupational and academic skills.
