Since 1999, Somerset County has been contracting with Middlesex County for bed space for youth who are deemed to be in need of secure confinement. All youth who are held in detention through Somerset County are placed in the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center (JDC), which is located on Apple Orchard Lane, off Route 130 North, in North Brunswick.

Juveniles may be placed in detention upon arrest for a complaint of juvenile delinquency (offense) and may remain in detention until their case is completed. Juveniles also may be sent to detention for up to 60 days as part of a disposition (sentencing)**. Parents of youth placed in juvenile detention are provided with a Detention Information Sheet which offers information about visitation, phone calls, mail, personal items, clothing, and directions.

Social services, educational services, medical services, and psychiatric services are provided as needed. The Coordinator of Juvenile Institutional Services gathers pertinent information, provides case management, acts as liaison between the detention center and other agencies involved with the detained youth, and advocates for all Somerset County youth in detention.

For more information about juvenile detention, contact Monica Mulligan at 908-704-6326 or Mulliga@co.somerset.nj.us.

**Youth receiving dispositions that include commitment time of 6 months or more are transferred to the Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC).  Information about JJC facilities can be found at the  Juvenile Justice Commission page.
