The purpose of a MYSC is to encourage, coordinate, and integrate existing services for youth at-risk of or already involved in the juvenile justice system by determining the needs of at-risk youth in their community; developing and proposing new and innovative programs to meet the identified needs; and informing the public of the nature and extent of juvenile problems and the availability of services to meet those needs.

Currently there are 14 Municipal Youth Services Commissions serving all 21 municipalities. The Board of County Commissioners provides funding annually to the Municipal Commissions for programs that are geared towards prevention of at-risk behaviors.

Periodically, representatives from Municipal Commissions present reports on their progress at monthly County Commission meetings. Staff from the Office of Youth Services provides resource information and technical assistance to the volunteers who serve as appointed members of the Municipal Youth Services Commissions.
